The Leafs announced on July 25th that they had traded for “right shot” defenseman Jordan Schmaltz. In exchange, they sent minor-league defenseman Andreas Borgman to St. Louis. Borgman is a solid AHL top pairing defenseman and could be a good option for the Blues’ 3rd pairing. Borgman was penciled in by many fans to finally take his rightful place at the 3rd pairing, left defenseman spot this upcoming season.
Jordan Schmaltz coming back in this trade, is an interesting pickup. He was a great piece in a really good San Antonio Rampage team in the AHL last season. He was called up to the Blues, played 20 games and it all went down the drain. He also had to battle injuries last season. I think the Leafs believe Schmaltz will bloom into the proper defenseman we all hope he’d be under our highly praised development and medical staff.
I personally think we could have gotten a better defenseman like Julius Honka of Dallas or someone else. But giving up an AHL player for a solid 3rd pair RD is a pretty good trade for the Leafs. The Leafs look to use Schmaltz to improve their already replenished defense corps.
